Sample Answer
One of my favourite books is "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. This classic novel, published in 1960, is set in the American Deep South during the 1930s and addresses complex social issues, particularly racism and moral growth.
The story revolves around a young girl named Scout Finch, who lives with her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus, a lawyer. The plot follows Scout's childhood experiences as Atticus defends a black man, Tom Robinson, who is unjustly accused of raping a white woman. Through Scout’s innocent eyes, readers are exposed to the prejudices and injustices of society, as well as the lessons of empathy and understanding that Atticus instills in his children.
I first discovered this book in high school during an English class. Our teacher assigned it as part of our literature curriculum, and it quickly captivated me with its powerful themes and rich characterization.
What makes "To Kill a Mockingbird" my favourite book is its invaluable life lessons. The character of Atticus Finch, in particular, embodies integrity and moral fortitude. This story not only entertains but also encourages readers to reflect on their own values and the importance of standing up for what is right, regardless of societal pressures. Overall, it remains a timeless piece that resonates with the ongoing struggles for justice and equality in our world.
