Sample Answer
One of the most captivating books I have recently read is ‘Educated’ by Tara Westover. This memoir chronicles Westover's journey from growing up in a strict and abusive household in rural Idaho, where formal education was not a priority, to earning a PhD from Cambridge University.
I chose to read this book because I had heard numerous positive reviews about it, particularly praising Tara's resilience and determination. I was also intrigued by the theme of self-discovery through education, which resonates with me as a lifelong learner.
From ‘Educated,’ I gained profound insights into the power of education and the importance of self-advocacy. Westover’s experiences highlighted the transformative role that education can play in an individual’s life, especially for those who come from challenging backgrounds. It was moving to see how she overcame numerous obstacles, from familial loyalty to cultural expectations, to carve out her own path.
This book was significant for me as it reinforced my belief in the importance of education in shaping one’s identity and future. It reminded me of the privileges I have enjoyed in my own educational pursuits, and it encouraged me to never take those opportunities for granted. Overall, ‘Educated’ is not just an account of Westover’s life; it is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
